Tomic played in Istanbul this week
This week, Tomic competed at a Challenger tournament in Istanbul.
After beating Skander Mansouri in his Instanbul opener, Tomic suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Nick Hardt in the Istanbul round-of-16. Hardt, ranked at No 316 in the world, edged out Tomic 6-2 3-6 7-6 (6). In the first set, Tomic had a 2-1 after the opening three games without a break but then Hardt claimed back-to-back breaks and won the next five games to seal the opener.
After losing the first set, Tomic also found himself down by a break in the second set. Down by a set and a break, Tomic responded as he collected back-to-back breaks in the fourth and sixth games of the second set to win four games in a row – take a 5-2 lead – eventually send the match into a decider.
In the third set, Tomic opened an early 4-0 lead and it appeared that the Australian was cruising toward completing a comeback win. But then, Tomic lost one of his two breaks in the sixth game and he also missed out on a match point in the 10th game.
In the third-set tie-break, Tomic saved two consecutive match points to tie the tie-break to six points apiece. But then, Tomic lost the next two points and that was the end of the match.
