There are disappointments that hit you, or it would be better to say, overwhelm you. Something that you didn’t expect, or something that went differently than you anticipated. And it hurts. You are disappointed, angry, very frustrated.
Something has broken inside you and you fear that you won’t be able to recover from this nasty fall. Sports are also like this: sometimes a joy, sometimes a cross to bear. But if we use our experiences wisely, we can bring home resources that will also be useful in life.
Yes, that’s right: even where you can’t find anything good now, there is something good for you. Maybe it wasn’t what you wanted, but it was what you needed. Of course, you’ll understand this later, in a little while. Right now, the emotion is still too strong, the wound bleeds and burns.
Here’s how you can approach your disappointment: 1- The first step is to respect the pain. That’s right: respect it, give it space. Don’t put it in a drawer pretending nothing happened, pretending to be strong or indifferent.
Allow yourself a little pain every day: a window of time when you can feel bad, cry, punch a pillow, scream loudly in the car, write all those thoughts that crowd your mind and heart on a sheet of paper. 2- Once you have taken the first step, which can last a few days or as long as you need, you are ready for the second step: we need to look at what happened from different perspectives in order to give it the best meaning and, consequently, experience better feelings.
Ask yourself these questions and write down the answers: What useful lessons can I learn from this situation? What is good here for me? What opportunities are hidden behind this challenge? How can this disappointment be useful to me? What qualities/resources will it allow me to train to get through it? 3- Now that you have managed to see the situation from different perspectives and applied a good ointment to promote healing over the wound, you are ready to focus on new goals.
