Stanford University women’s tennis team outlasted Ohio State 4-1 to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. With this win, the Cardinal improves to 24-2 overall and has now won 21 straight games. The Cardinal will now travel to Orlando, the final venue of the NCAA Tournament, to face No.
2 Texas A&M in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 17. Early on, the Cardinal held 3-0, 4-0, and 4-0 leads in the stadium’s three games, showing what a tall order an upset was going to be for the Buckeyes. Stanford has now won 13 straight doubles points, with Sara Choy and Alexandra Yepifanova finishing first for their third straight win, followed by a 6-2 win by Connie Ma and Valencia Xu on court three, their 11th straight.
No. 16 Angelica Blake and Alexis Blokhina were able to pull off a ranked win on court victory, grabbing the game-winning spot at the same time as court three ended. Blake was unstoppable on court three in singles, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Isabelle Boulais.
The no. The only point for Ohio State came on court two in a top-20 matchup between No. 18 Ma and No. 20 Irina Cantos Siemers, with the latter winning 6-1, 6-4. Valencia Xu and Sara Choy were both up a set on courts five and six, and No.
84 Blokhina fought back 6-0, 4-1 to force a tiebreak in the second set which she won, 7-5. Xu would be the deciding factor, a 7-5, 6-0 victory over No. 89 Shelly Bereznyak, a player who hadn’t lost a game since February. The ranked win is Xu’s third of the season.
