At the Internazionali d’Italia, Stefanos Tsitsipas wants to repeat the experience of last year and try to improve it. The Greek tennis player reached the final in the last edition, clearly lost against Novak Djokovic. In Rome, however, this year the number five in the world wants to do his best, after a few tournaments on clay played between ups and downs: no defense of the title at the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo.
Final lost in Barcelona against Alcaraz, defeat in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open at the hands of the finalist Struff. “I’m ready. In Monte-Carlo I didn’t play up to my expectations, while in Barcelona Alcaraz was superior to me,” said the finalist of the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Together with the Spanish Grand Slam champion, Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune are indicated as the next Big Three of tennis. Tsitsipas, however, does not feel any fear: “I’m not worried. These young people are a stimulus for us, but I’m young too.
I expect we will face each other many times and it will be exciting”.
Tsitsipas on winning a Grand Slam
Considering the titles won, the ranking he boasts and the desire he shows, Stefanos Tsitsipas’s candidacy to win a Grand Slam is obvious, especially after two finals played: at the Roland Garros in 2021 and at the Australian Open this year.
On both he admitted: “I lost because Djokovic was stronger than me. It means that I have to make a leap in quality. I know I can become number one in the world. I came close, but I know I was born a champion.” For Tsitsipas, the opportunity to become Grand Slam champion could present itself again at the Roland Garros: it will also be the possibility for the Greek tennis player to redeem the last edition.
In 2022, in fact, the one who was a candidate to be one of the possible finalists of the tournament surrendered in the fourth round against Holger Rune, after having already suffered in the debut match against Lorenzo Musetti.
