Jannik Sinner will not participate in the Davis Cup group stage. Italy will therefore have to do without its number one and Matteo Berrettini, who injured his ankle during the match with Arthur Rinderknech at the US Open.Sinner preferred to take a moment’s break after the exhausting match with Alexander Zverev.

The match lasted 4 hours and 41 minutes and saw the young Italian in great difficulty from a physical point of view.A few moments into the third hour of play, Sinner started to feel cramps and trudged towards his chair. From that moment, Sinner tried to relax his muscles at the first opportunity by stretching.

His heart wasn’t enough, because Zverev closed the score in the fifth set and eliminated the last Italian present in the men’s main draw.Sinner explained: “Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to recover after the tournaments in America and unfortunately I won’t be able to be part of the team in Bologna.

It is always an honor to play for our country and I am convinced I will return to the national team as soon as possible. Good luck to the guys, see you.”

Filippo Volandri expresses his opinion on Sinner

Italy will face Canada, Chile and Sweden in Group A with the aim of gaining a pass for the Final Phases. The captain of the Italian Davis Cup team Filippo Volandri has chosen to rely on Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Arnaldi, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

The current captain of the Italian Davis Cup team talked about Sinner’s absence on the FITP official website. He said: “We wish Jannik a speedy recovery, we know how much he cares about Davis, he has already shown it. We respect his decision, I’m sure we will have him available in the future.

Matteo was once again very unlucky, he had put himself at our complete disposal, he was looking forward to this commitment because he knew it would be good for him, we are also waiting for the next challenges. I will try to take advantage of all the squad I have available. I need everyone’s availability, everyone must be ready.”
