Iga Swiatek humbly suggested that her astonishing 2022 season wasn’t something very unique as she noted that the great Serena Williams also used to have very dominant years. Last year, Swiatek made nine finals and collected eight titles – two of those eight titles came on the Grand Slam level and the Pole finished the 2022 season ranked more than 5,000 points ahead of at the time second-ranked Ons Jabeur.
“I mean, eight titles, two majors, nine finals. Iga, who does that?” the interviewer asked Swiatek after the Pole’s 6-0 6-1 win over Danielle Collins in the Doha round-of-16, per Sportskeeda. Swiatek quickly responded to the question by stating: “I mean, Serena does that.
The Big-3, they do that!”
Swiatek on the consistency on the WTA Tour
After a very dominant 2022 season, Swiatek didn’t make a really strong start to the year in Australia. At the inaugural United Cup, Swiatek suffered a 6-2 6-2 loss to Jessica Pegula before picking up a 6-4 6-4 defeat to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open round-of-16.
Swiatek has looked a bit shaky at the start of the season and many are wondering how well she will do in 2023. “I don’t really know how to kind of, how to judge that (on the change in consistency at the top of the womens’ game), because on the other hand there were also really consistent players like three, four years ago, like Naomi or Bianca Andreescu.
But we will see what’s gonna happen in the future. For sure my goal is to be consistent, and it was since the beginning. I wish I could kind of — like from 2021 I just wanted to be consistent but on a higher level, like be in semifinals, finals.
For sure last season kind of showed that I can do that. But right now I want to kind of come back to the balance and also know that I’m not gonna win every tournament,” Swiatek explained.
